An honest review - I wanted to love this resort, but based on how much they charge to stay there, for us it fell short of our ex

discoveringtheworld (London, United Kingdom) on Apr 19, 2025

I wanted to love this hotel but there are definitely areas which need improving. This trip was a surprise for my husbands 50th birthday travelling as a family (Myself, my husband and 12 year old daughter).... We were flying in and out of Liberia airport and chose to stay at the Westin Reserve for the last three nights of our two week trip. After a busy 11 nights, the purpose of this stay was to relax and recharge and being only a little over an hour away from the airport, it was an ideal location. I booked through booking.com as it was a much cheaper rate than booking direct and chose a Deluxe Junior Suite. The resort is huge, but there are plenty of little shuttles (large golf buggy style) driving around that you can flag down and they will take you where you need to go. We arrived at approximately 1pm, our luggage was looked after while we checked in and were given lots of information about the resort. While we waited for our room to be ready, we got a shuttle to Spirula the Italian as our Daughter wanted Pasta for lunch. After we waited for a table and seated we were advised there was a limited menu and Pizzas were only being served as Takeout with the priority being for pool orders so to expect an hour wait. So we headed to the buffet at Mitra Market instead. We then walked back up to reception, (took about 15 minutes), our bags were loaded on to a shuttle and we were taken to our accommodation. We were room 176, large buildings split into 4 rooms, two upstairs, two downstairs, we were on the upper level to the rear, quite close to the reception side of the resort. Room was clean, featured a Kingsize bed, sofa bed for our Daughter, (separated from the main bed by a wall with a large TV), plenty of wardrobe / storage space, and a safe. Liked that the bathroom area had a separate toilet / shower area. Bathroom area was extremely hot. Had messaged ahead advising it was my Husbands 50th birthday and they put chocolate covered strawberries, a cake and a bottle of fizzy pink wine in our room. Minibar is refilled daily with Imperial beer, Pepsi, and other sodas, waters, a packet of Oreo biscuits and another fruity snack. I believe you can ask if you need it refilling more often. Balcony has two rocking chairs and a table - would have been nice to have a third chair. I'll start with the Pros: The grounds of this hotel are stunning and we loved just wandering around taking in the beauty of the trees and shrubs, listening to the sounds of the many birds, squirrels, huge iguanas, insects and particularly the howler monkeys. It is also kept spotlessly clean. I said to my husband I felt like there was a hidden ninja style cleaning team on toilets around the pool and Mitra Market area. They are used by a lot of people but there was barely ever a sign that anyone had used them, toilet cubicles were clean, surfaces clean and bins always either empty or with very little in them. Pool area is beautiful, loved laying listening to and watching the birds, the blue-jays are so cheeky, soon as anyone puts anything food related down, they spring into action. Area was kept clean, plenty of staff removing cups / food containers, tidying etc. There is a volleyball net and basketball hoop in the pool, and there were balls laying around. There is a drink / food service, bar staff wander around and take orders, but we always visited the bar in person and occasionally sat on the swim up pool bar stools if there was space. The bar staff work so hard! From 10AM until 6PM its constant... people need to remember their manners and remind their kids too - these guys do not stop, they work tirelessly serving drinks to the guests and we witnessed several rude adults and kids being abrupt, incapable of using the words Please and Thank you. Drinks are mainly served in paper cups which im not a fan of, but if you asked they would serve in hard plastic instead. We also saw pool tables / ping pong tables and corn hole near the pool. Also lots of other sports options, basketball, tennis, pickleball, bike hire etc but we just wanted to be lazy. There is also a QR code at lobby you can scan and get information on the walking trails. The beach is beautiful, but no beaches in Costa Rica are provate so yes there are people trying to sell you good, tours, massages, horse rides etc, but this is only as you walk through from the hotel, we were never approached once on the beach, and a polite 'No Gracias' was sufficient, we were never hassled. The sunset on the beach is beautiful, walking back to our hotel room we saw some monkeys in the trees which my Daughter was thrilled about. Later we saw four raccoons. On our last night we headed up to the lobby bar for sunset which was beautiful. We were also fortunate to see more monkeys, it was like they were migrating from our side of the resort to the other, there were easily 30 of them including some baby ones. We then sat and watched the dancers who were putting on short show for those eating in the Tapas bar. On our way back to our room we also saw an Anteater. The evening entertainment on the deck was Karaoke on the Sunday, a 30 minute animal themed dance show on the Monday and a magician and a silent disco on the Tuesday night. Now for the negatives: This is a big resort with lots of guests and lines at the Mitra Market (buffet) can be long. At breakfast time in particular there are not enough staff members to show guests to tables - resulting in longer waiting times than necessary. We only ate at the buffet as found the lines were too long for the other restaurants, would have been nice to be able to book a table in advance (I believe this is something they've done away with recently). Always found something we would eat at the buffet. On our second evening, we spotted two rats scurrying around the floor near the pizza oven, then later a small one sat on the edge of the water area outside the restaurant. Of course the nature is a big reason we travelled to this country, however I personally don't think rats have a place in a kitchen! I also witnessed a member of staff on the Eat well / Asian station trying to discreetly eat a burger, she had gloves on which she then used to handle other food types on her station - this should not be happening! Bar service, again not enough staff. On the evening of the silent disco, there was one member of bar staff, trying to serve all guests for the outdoor areas, this was ridiculous. Monday night after the forest animals show the main beach bar area closed, I think it was only about 9.15 / 9.30pm, why so early? The Triton pool bar is very popular, but i felt the cocktails were too sugary / fruity, like you needed to order double measures of the alcohol so you could taste anything other than sugary juice. The water fountain at the pool bar didn't work the entire time we were there. I hate to think of the number of plastic 500ml bottles we went through during our stay, hotel must go through thousands everyday - this shoukd be restricted and more water fountains installed to reduce the plastic waste. We spent most of Tuesday in the pool, my Husband got out and we noticed his legs were a strange shade of green, mine the same and our Daughter also had it on her legs and fingers - not sure if this is due to chemicals / unclean pool. Sadly, I was also over charged - by $693 and it took a lot of time to be resolved. I booked through booking.com as it was a much cheaper rate than direct, and selected to pay hotel directly. Upon checkin my Husband provided our credit card whilst I completed some paperwork. It was the until later on that evening I realised I'd been overcharged, so I contacted the reservations team through the booking.com 'contact property service' which I'd used previously to communicate with the hotel. I didn't get any response so on day two headed up the lobby. The gentleman on front desk said it needed to be handled by reservations which weren't open until 9am so he took my email address and said he'd get them to sort it and email me. I didn't receive an email so contacted them again via booking.com and received a response to say it was being looked into. Later that evening I messaged back to ask if the $693 was being refunded to my card, and received a response asking me to email the reception team - so I did. Upon checkout - 3 days later, this was still not resolved and the lady who I was dealing with offered a refund of just over $200 which I politely advised her was incorrect again, showed her my booking.com confirmation email. Eventually she confirmed a refund of the $693 would be made to my card. I asked why this had happened, she said booking.com had changed the nighty rate, and that its always better to book direct - however I know at the time of booking i saved $100s of dollars using booking.com. I will be taking it up with booking.com, however I shouldn't have had to waste so much of my short stay at the hotel trying to get this resolved, it shouldn't have taken three days. I consider us to be well travelled, and have stayed in many 5 star hotels around the world, but this has been one of the most expensive. When paying $700+ per night, I expect to be writing nothing but a positive review. Sadly for us, in some areas the Westin didn't live up to our expectations.

A beautiful stay!

BreMNda (Metro Minneapolis-Saint Paul, Minnesota) on Apr 19, 2025

Our family of 4 stayed here for 5 nights, as part of a group of 5 families/15 people total - for our daughters' HS senior year spring break. We wanted a beautiful, fun location for all ages, without a "lou...d" spring break vibe. It was perfect. We loved our deluxe jr suite, the grounds were beautiful and well kept, very friendly and attentive staff who always wanted to help in any way they could. Main pool and swim-up bar were great, we spent a lot of time there because it was VERY hot, 95° every day. This was my family's third all-inclusive experience (others were Riviera Maya, Mexico) and I would say pretty comparable in terms of food quality. My job is food, it's what I do, and I would say the food was mostly average - with some big hits and big misses. There was a lot of hype about the Bamboo restaurant, but it was definitely not the favorite for our group. The restaurants we wanted to return to were the Cauri Lobby Bar & Bistro at sunset (my personal favorite), Faisanella, Manglar Seafood, and Spirula. We avoided La Sabana as we didn't see many positive reviews - although we did have a good lunch in that same space during the day. The pizza counter at Spirula was great. Buffet - we're not huge fans of buffets in general - we only ate there for breakfast, found some basics that got our day started (loved the fresh fruits, juices, and custom omelets) - also went other times to grab some ice cream. We ordered room service a few times, always arrived within the promised 45 minutes, a couple times much faster than that - I liked to order for breakfast just so I could get banana bread and a latte. We all wished there was a coffee shop on site that was included in the all-inclusive (like the other all-inclusives we've stayed at), but there was only a coffee shop where you had to pay extra. We liked the special cocktail menus at each restaurant. We booked both airport transfers and a sunset catamaran with Lazy Lizard (loved! just be aware if you have young children or want to avoid a party crowd) through Erik G. - he's on the beach in a blue google shirt - we arranged everything with him through WhatsApp, VERY responsive and attentive, he took very good care of our group, would highly recommend. We zip lined at Diamante, used the transfer service the Westin recommends, Go CR Vision, and arranged that prior to arrival - fun and it went well.
