First Costa Rica trip

Abhijit C (Charlotte, North Carolina) on Dec 28, 2024

We have been to the Caribbean 11 or so times but our first trip to Costa Rica. Likely wont be last. Some general comments: Our favorite part of CR was the tour. It was a day long tour (~11 hrs). We went to a couple of waterfalls (Rio Celeste was a good experience and we even saw a baby eyelash viper sunning itself by the trail on the hike to the fall). We toured a privately maintained rain forest nature reserve (there are a few different ones I believe). Saw many different birds (including a mot mot, blue gray tanager and toucan of course), sloths, a tapir, a couple of frogs. Kids (11 and 16) loved this experience. Wish we could have done more excursions but didn't have time. Eric G (guy in blue google t-shirt) on the beach set us up. He is an expert with over 2 decades of experience, and I got the feeling very honest about pros and cons. We had a very good experience and would highly recommend him. Beach was very good. Beautiful water, and great backdrop with low lying cliffs that form the bay. Lots of big trees make it shady and interesting. Good for walks though there are some horse tours / evidence of horse tours you have to watch for. Kids thought this was one of the more interesting/fun beaches because of the waves. The waves were not very high but were fairly strong because of the way the beach slopes into the water, and my 11 yr old daughter spent hours "body surfing" the waves. There were more people in the water than we usually see in other resorts. Didn't really have an issue finding chairs and there were plenty of trees providing shade. Big nice pool that was fairly lively. Seating was tricky later in the day because of "towel reservations". There were two ping pong tables and a few pool tables, so it was easy to get a spot. Kids spend quite a bit of time there. Lunch at La Sabana was pretty good. I liked the fish tacos and whole fried fish. Lunch pizza at Spirula was very good. Dinner at Spirula was good as well. The buffet was a little more limited than some other resorts we have been to. Some stations are not self-service, and particularly the fruit station servings tend to be smaller and I (and several other guests) had to ask for additional slices pretty much every day. Faisanella was a bit of hit and miss. Lamb shank was good, Steak was underdone. The St Tropez Tart was two buns with some lemon filling between (no fruits). However in our experience this kind of mixed experience is to be expected in many AI resorts. Overall no real issues of any kind and definitely some good experiences. This property is designed similarly to Paradisus resorts in Punta Cana ( our favorite resort in DR) and spreads out over a large area. We like the open style (as opposed to multi story denser footprints) but going back and forth between beach-room-pool-meals can be a bit time consuming (particularly for not very organized folks like us). We got a premium suite near all the activities and that was really convenient. Would recommend the same if possible. Though golf cart service was very good, so not a big deal for most. Overall the most relaxed week of 2024 (maybe even including 2023) for me, so a great trip!

2 star resort

Old property that needs lot of work for it's name. We stayed for 4 days and food at the main mitra market was never fresh and didn't have much choices, not enough staff so service is also poor as we had to wait for drinks, literally only one fresh pepper grinder in the entire restaurant and if you are a hot tea drinker then your water will be like warm in all their restaurants. Bamboo Asian bistro is a shame so DO NOT waste your time booking a dinner.
