First time in Cuba and will definitely be back.

Sarrah S on Jul 10, 2024

This was our first time in Cuba and can't wait to go back! When we first checked into the hotel it was late and there was a mix up with our room. It was not clean. When I went down to the front desk the lady was more then accommodating and promptly changed our room. The new room was much better. The rooms themselves are outdated but clean and beds were comfortable. The cleaning staff were amazing always greeting you with a smile in the morning with fresh towels and water daily. There was always plenty of food in the buffet and you were always able to find something to eat. The fresh fruit was amazing. The wait staff in the buffet were all very kind and greeted us promptly as we walked in you would never know if someone was having a bad day because the kindness was always over flowing. The entertainment team was amazing there was always plenty of activities on the beach in the morning and by the pool. I really appreciated how they went above and beyond to make everyone feel included. My boys are very shy and quiet Hansell was fantastic taking notice and had them playing with a beach ball with others in the pool area allowing them to loosen up a little and have more fun. The games and competitions by the pool were always very entertaining. The bar tenders were amazing you never had to wait too long to be served. The nightly shows were a lot of fun to watch and a perfect way to end the evening. The only downside was one week wasn't long enough. Thank you to all the staff for making this trip so much fun and very memorable. We will definitely be back.

Tropical Nightmare

Myuri M on Jul 09, 2024

Our family's stay at Grand Memories Varadero was unfortunately marred by numerous issues that significantly impacted our comfort, safety, and overall enjoyment. Upon arrival, we were immediately beset by swarms of mosquitoes. Despite wearing mosquito repellent, we were unable to fend off the relentless insects. My mother alone suffered over 50 bites on just one arm, highlighting the severity of the problem and the ineffectiveness of standard protective measures. Our room's air conditioning was non-functional, a critical issue given the tropical climate. When we returned from dinner around 11:00 PM, the room remained uncomfortably hot. My mother had to walk to the reception desk, located 3-5 minutes away, late at night to report the problem. The staff who came to inspect insisted the AC was working, despite clear evidence to the contrary. This dismissive attitude seemed indicative of a reluctance to address guest concerns. We endured three nights in this sweltering room before management finally relocated us. The process of changing rooms was arduous, requiring a two-hour wait just to be assigned a new accommodation. Our new room was situated on the opposite side of the resort, significantly increasing our daily walk to the beach to about 10 minutes. The infrequent and unreliable trolley service, which often passed by without stopping, exacerbated this inconvenience. A snorkeling excursion revealed alarming safety oversights. The life jackets provided lacked proper fastenings, with only a single buckle instead of the standard zippers and multiple buckles. Staff failed to verify if guests had secured their life jackets correctly. As a result, when my sister entered the water, her life jacket floated up over her head, rendering it useless. I experienced issues with my snorkel mask, which continuously filled with water. When I reported this to the instructor, he dismissively stated that those goggles were known to be faulty, yet he had given them to me anyway. My mother, not a strong swimmer, also struggled with an improperly fitting life jacket and cut her finger while trying to re-board the boat. The room's cleanliness was subpar, evidenced by my sister discovering ants in her bed and luggage. This pest issue added to our overall discomfort and raised concerns about hygiene standards throughout the resort. The bathroom facilities were not just problematic, but potentially hazardous. The shower had an unusually high step, making it difficult and dangerous to enter and exit. Alarmingly, the grab bar that should have been there to assist guests had been removed, leaving no support for safely navigating this treacherous design. Both my father and I slipped and fell on our backs while using it, underscoring the serious safety risk this poses to guests of all ages. This negligent removal of a crucial safety feature is unacceptable and exemplifies the resort's overall lack of concern for guest safety and comfort. The dining options were disappointing, with little variety between the buffet and specialty restaurants. The food quality was poor, with attempts to dress up buffet items as fine dining falling flat. For future guests considering this resort, I strongly recommend bringing your own snacks, condiments, and even towels. Items like hot sauce, maple syrup, Nutella, and ramen can help supplement the lackluster food options. Additionally, be prepared for potential safety hazards, particularly in the bathrooms. In conclusion, our experience at Grand Memories Varadero was far below expectations. The combination of pest issues, malfunctioning amenities, safety concerns, and poor food quality made for an unpleasant and at times dangerous vacation. The staff's apparent indifference to guest complaints only compounded these issues. I would caution potential visitors to carefully consider other options before booking a stay at this resort.
