Reconfiguring our aircraft to serve you better

WestJet has recently acquired several Boeing 737 aircraft from other airlines that are configured with economy-only seating. WestJet is in the process of updating these aircraft to the standard WestJet cabin design, which includes Premium, Extended Comfort and Economy seating, Wi-Fi access, in-seat power and enhanced food and beverage options. We expect to complete this process by the end of 2025. Learn more below.
Identifying an “Economy seating only” aircraft
When booking on WestJet.com, you will be able to recognize if you are booking a flight on one of these aircraft by looking for the “Economy seating only” indicator. If you booked with a travel agent, corporate travel arranger or online travel agency, please consult them to confirm if your flight will be on an aircraft awaiting reconfiguration.
To identify if you are travelling on “Economy seating only” aircraft for a previously booked trip:
- Visit Flight Guide within 72 hours of your departure and identify if the “Economy seats only” label is next to your aircraft type
- Review your Check-in email that is issued 24 hours prior to departure and look for the “Economy is different on this aircraft” message
- When completing the check-in process on or after 24 hours prior to departure, look for the “Economy is different on this aircraft” message when selecting your seats
You’ll still enjoy our Economy service on “Economy seating only” aircraft, but the seats on this aircraft may have limited legroom. As the aircraft await reconfiguration, some amenities, including power and Wi-Fi, may not be available.
While we are actively working on reconfiguring these aircraft to achieve a consistent onboard experience across our fleet as soon as possible, we’ve heard our guests’ feedback that the Premium and Extended Comfort product onboard these aircraft does not deliver the WestJet standard. In response, we have removed the Premium and Extended Comfort products across all “Economy seating only” aircraft as of May 15, 2025. Moving forward, these aircraft will offer Economy fare bundles only (EconoFlex, Econo, UltraBasic) until their reconfiguration is complete.
If you have booked a Premium or Extended Comfort seat on an aircraft with “Economy seating only” for travel following the removal of this product on or after May 15, 2025 you will receive an email prior to your travel date, notifying you that Premium or Extended Comfort is no longer available on your aircraft. You will retain your seat selection; and your itinerary will be automatically submitted for a partial refund. Please allow up to 30 days after your flight departs for your refund to be processed.
If your itinerary has been affected by this removal and you wish to change your reservation, the following options are available to you:
Premium fare booking options
- Change your booking to a similar routing on an aircraft with a Premium cabin. The alternative flight must be within 48 hours of original departure. Any fees and difference in fare will be waived.
- Cancel your flight and receive a full refund for your ticket to original form of payment, including associated fees and services.
To proceed with one of the above options, please Contact Us.
If you booked with a travel agent, corporate travel arranger or online travel agency, please consult with them to proceed with one of the above options.
Extended Comfort options
- Cancel your Extended Comfort seat selection via Manage Trips (link) and receive a refund, with the option to re-select an alternative seat for a fee.
Investing in consistency across our growing Boeing 737 fleet
Our fleet of Boeing 737 aircraft is expanding, adding essential capacity across our network, allowing us to provide our guests with increased access to affordable and critical air travel.
As these aircraft await reconfiguration, we recognize that the overall experience and available amenities on these “Economy seating only” aircraft differ from our other aircraft. To elevate comfort and convenience, the reconfiguration of these aircraft will introduce Premium and Economy cabins, seating options with more legroom, Wi-Fi access, in-seat power and updated galleys, to bring our guests enhanced choice in food and beverage options, including hot meals. These changes are designed to optimize space, enhance the in-flight experience, and provide a more enjoyable journey for our guests. Across WestJet our teams are working diligently to execute the reconfiguration of these aircraft as soon as possible and expect the process to be complete by the end of 2025.
Bolstering fleet growth amidst delays for direct-from-factory aircraft
As we actively expand our Boeing 737 fleet, it now includes aircraft formerly operated by Swoop, recently acquired Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft, and beginning this year, will include Sunwing Airlines aircraft. By incorporating these aircraft, we're able to sustain our anticipated growth across our network, despite global fleet delivery delays affecting the entire aviation industry.
