BE AWARE of TOURS at Grand Velas Riviera MAYA through their Blue Dreams tour company.

BE AWARE! TOUR was UNSAFE , SUBBED OUT to an inferior “company”, and Grand Velas would not stand behind their referral directly to them when there was a problem. “It is between you and Blue Dreams. Even ...though we referred you and have an office in our hotel, it’s not our problem” paraphrased. BLUE DREAMS is the tour company housed in Grand Velas resort. They provide excellent airport transfers BUT the tours are extremely costly and unsafe compared to VIATOR or similar tours. I chose to do the TULUM plus CENOTES tour from Blue Dreams. The tours were subbed out apparently to other companies not vetted by Grand Velas. The guides for our tour were not from Blue Dreams but from Cobasunset. This company sent a guide -Fernando. Fernando was on the take the entire trip. He tried to get us to buy at his acquaintance’s shops only “I can’t tell you where to shop, but all of the other shops are imported from China” . Also where to eat- of course at another “friend’s establishment”. We had to sneak away from him to eat elsewhere. And when he “found” us he “reminded “ us that the meeting point was at his “friend’s” restaurant, somewhat hostile manner. He guided us to another “friend” in a shop at Talum and after conferring, marked up a water bottle from $6 to $20. When we saw the Bottle elsewhere in the store for the lower price, we recognized fully what type of person this was. He “tricked us” for 20 minutes at the beginning telling us “No Hablo Ingles”. He thought he was very funny. He marketed himself and these shops like a commercial as we drove, instead of telling us anything about Talum. We were promised 4 hours which would be flexible as we paid for a private tour. Fernando was in a hurry the entire time. He told us how he didn’t like being a tour guide. He took us to TULUM and rushed across the site so he could stand under a tree and point out what there was to see from a distance, then he was going to just “Meet us later” as we went to the different buildings without a guide. Underground in a cavern in the cenotes, he apparently thought he “Needed” to hurry me up. With no light, except his small flashlight pointed elsewhere, out of the dark, without warning or permission he reached out in the water, grasped my lapel of my life jacket and yanked me forward so close to him that I literally gagged at the smell of alcohol/tobacco on his breath. The stench of alcohol was evident walking up to 5 feet behind him. We had called the resort early on to let them know that even though one of our party had a back problem, he would not slow down, and was rude. They called him and he became more rude and seemed very passive aggressive from that point on. After he grabbed me underground- i pushed him back and yelled “NO!” I did not feel safe and called the Grand Velas once I got out of the cavern again to ask the concierge to wait for us to get back before leaving for the day as we felt unsafe. We did get back to the resort safely. Grand Velas informed us that there would be no refund of $1100 that we spent for the tour from them as it was not their problem. I made a written report for Blue Dreams, who gave us only a partial refund for a hellacious experience. These tours are not vetted by Grand Velas. Be aware. This was unsafe, ruined a day of a long awaited vacation. The rest of the resort experience was lovely.
“Ok” all inclusive

I wanted to like this resort but I just couldn’t and here’s why: the food and drinks, while unlimited, just aren’t that great! Service was slow quite often and some employees just seemed less than thrilled... to be working. The pool area was oddly big and the beach not that great. I think a lot of people really like this resort, I would probably give it another chance when my kids are older and eat more food.
