Excellent staff and service in a beautiful setting

Our stay at Occidental Cozumel exceeded expectations. We were traveling for a father-daughter getaway from the late winter weather in the northern US. Dad was finally using flight credits from a cancelled ...trip due to the COVID shutdowns. A direct flight from Minneapolis and recommendations from family clinched the choice. My father is in his 80s and has some physical limitations. We really appreciated the layout as well as the hotel accomodating our request for ground floor rooms. The food at the buffets was generous and very good. We had no trouble making reservations for the a la carte restaurants. When in Mexico, enjoy Mexican food we thought - and we did. The seafood was also very fresh and excellent. We met a lot of regulars and found the fellow guests to be friendly and helpful at giving various tips for us 1st timers. Even the Canadians didn't hold our current president's obsession with attacking their country against us ;). Honestly, we came to Mexico for a vacation to take a break from the crazy and the endless doomscrolling, and we mostly succeeded thanks to the great accomodations and staff. We love nature and enjoyed encounters with the local wildlife - iguanas, coatimundis, various birds and the fishing pelicans. It was cool to see the resort's hawk handler and his bird (a Harris hawk) who patrol the open-air lunch restaurant to try to deter the grackle-ffamily birds that like to try to grab a snack off tables (I forget their name in Spanish). We had hoped to go on a snorkling trip but it didn't work out for us this time (see below). I was impressed to see how many divers and snorklers were headed out every day from the dive shop dock though. Our diver friend who comes every year extolled us with all the amazing sea creatures he saw every day on his dives. I was not the same as experiencing it personally but gave us a good idea why Cozumel is one of the top places in the world for diving. I may try to recertify to dive after being inspired on this trip. The resort staff really made the trip special for us, though. They were unfailingly friendly, helpful, and kind. I speak rudimentary Spanish and love to practice and learn more. The staff put up with my efforts and were patient at my grasping for words and not always understanding their replies. They could easily switch to English but usually didn't unless I did first. Spanglish worked pretty well too. When my father came down with a sudden illness (not related to anything at the resort), they jumped into action and got medical care to the hotel and then a transfer to the local hospital. The visiting doctor and the EMT onsite were amazing and very skilled. Their calm care made all the difference. Dad (a retired doctor himself) ended up admitted to the hospital, unfortunately. The staff continually checked on both of us during this time and helped me with all the details to handle the situation. The Cozumel hospital he went to, Cozumed, was excellent. Although my father's stay was cut short by illness, we really enjoyed our stay. and dad is recovering well. We hope to return.

Not treated as VIP in fact I felt like I was being treated different I'm disabled. Not enough done for disabled people.
