Piling disappointments on top of disappointments
RJSINITHACA (Ithaca, New York) on Mar 27, 2025
We had a truly disappointing experience at the NY Marriott Marquis. First, the hotel was extremely noisy. All night, we heard kids running around and screaming in the hallways, and it never really stopped.... Second, when we wanted to leave, we had to wait roughly a half-hour to get an elevator. Elevators occasionally came but were full, and we would not fit in. We had to pick someone up and were afraid we would be late. Eventually, we got into a random elevator that stopped and just hoped it would get us to the bottom, which it eventually did. Third, we are members of the Marriott Club (titanium Marriott members) but, for breakfast, they would allow only 2 of us in the club at once, despite our being a family of 5 and despite the club being almost deserted. We were informed that we could eat together for an extra $500 (which would give us a "gold key"), but wow, did that seem excessive for being able to have breakfast together. They had an older gentleman monitoring the door and he actually asked us, when 2 of us would go in, whether the others had come out. He fancied himself a policeman. He told us we could not eat as a family in the 8th floor lobby or restaurant and would have to bring the food to our room (on the 19th floor). So breakfast was a really bad, fragmented experience (although the food was fine). Fourth, we called in our car number to the garage to tell them we were leaving, but when we went down, they said they did not have the number, and we would have to wait 45 minutes. I told them we had called in the number, but they could not find it. Fifth, when I answered a survey they sent, after we got home, and I complained about the poor service, we got an AI-written response (it was seriously tortured writing) from an AI company, not from Marriott. The letter made all sorts of apologies but offered no compensation of any kind and clearly would have no impact, despite the promises to improve, because it was not even from Marriott. I then wrote to say that the letter was really insulting (we were not even worth a response from a human), and got no response. Finally, we paid a fortune for the two rooms (our family was too large for a single room), and they seemed to feel that it was fine to take the money and give little in return. The experience was, to say the least, disappointing and we will not be staying at the hotel again.
Great hotel in a great location for Christmas week
AdvtrTrvlr (Camarillo, California) on Mar 14, 2025
We went to New York City for the first time in 40 years during Christmas week. We arrived on Christmas Day and left hours before New Year’s Eve. The crowds in the 10 square block area around Times Square a...re always chaotic and it was amazing how busy it was even by my standards. Our room was very nice, clean and surprisingly quiet. I asked for a room that could see the Time Square but not immediately overlooking Times Square. Everything was clean and comfortable. We ate breakfast in the M club as we are titanium members. The breakfast selections were huge and the food was always very good. We had Christmas dinner in the hotel because we flew on Christmas Day. The food was good, but not great because that was a huge volume of people. Over the course of the next several days, we had several meals in the restaurants downstairs. The service was always fair, but the food was always pretty good. As expected, there is a huge number of people that stay at this gigantic hotel and especially at this time of year it was probably extra crazy busy. The location of this hotel cannot be beat. We could see the Time Square ball drop area in addition to many other extractions, different windows. We worked extensively too pretty much all the major sites in New York City. If you can afford this hotel, it’s definitely worth it because of the location. It was very expensive and it did seem as though it was one of the giant Las Vegas hotels. We decided to stay here because we plan to go to NYC just once and wanted to do it up right.
