Poor, Awful, and Terrible Service

Cece H on Mar 20, 2025

I really wanted to love the service but I had the worst treatment on my birthday. I picked this place very carefully after tons of research. Even though I read negative comments; I thought well - how bad c...ould it really be? I got the answer alright. I went down for breakfast on day 2 (my birthday). At least 7 tables that arrived after me received their foods before I did. I was basically forgotten. My order was a common breakfast of scrambled eggs and a fruit plate. That’s it, nothing else. It took 35 minutes for my plate to arrive and both the food and the plate were freezing cold when they did arrive. I went up to my room literally crying after stopping at the reception to inform them. To the restaurant staff - Do not treat your guests this way, especially one that has been kind to you. I spent a lot of money on this trip and couldn’t even enjoy a common hot breakfast on my birthday. I am a happy go lucky positive person but this experience made me contemplate checking out and checking into the Hilton down the street. While the view is beautiful, the restaurant experience is absolutely poor, awful, and terrible. The day before this incident, I had treated all the staff very well and tipped heavily. However, things took an awful turn the next day. I offered to return my remaining breakfast vouchers for the rest of the week of my stay. I spent my money on food elsewhere during the visit, even though I had paid for breakfast to be included in my stay. Go for the view but be prepared to cater to your own meals. FYI Coffee maker in my room also didn’t work.

Luxury Stay With All The Amenities

RebeccaLiving (Castlegar, Canada) on Mar 16, 2025

We stayed at Costa Sur for 2 weeks. We loved the location - it is in “The Hills” area at the southern end of Puerto Vallarta, in the resort district. It is right on the beach, with its own little reef. ...We snorkeled a few times, and saw a wide variety of fish. We were on the second floor of the North Tower, and had such an incredible view of the ocean. The sunsets were stunning, and almost every morning we saw whales swimming by. The on-site restaurant served excellent food, and the barefoot bar was convenient to use during the day. Our room was open concept, and had all the amenities we needed - fully stocked kitchen and bathroom, lots of drawer/closet space, king-sized bed, smart TV, and a large balcony. Martha was our housekeeper, and she was lovely - very friendly, accommodating, and helpful. I had 2 massages, and both were soothing and relaxing. Jocabeth was the Vallarta Adventures on-site representative, and she set us up with 3 amazing excursions. The little store was very handy, and carried a wide variety of supplies. We enjoyed our stay there, and would definitely go back to that location.

Wonderful stay at Costa Sur Resort in Puerto Vallarta

gltompkins on Mar 12, 2025

I enjoyed a wonderful stay at Costa Sur Resort from January to March 2025. Having Juan greet us when we arrived was so special! I don't think I've ever seen him without his wonderful smile! And it was s...o nice seeing Andy out front greeting us and helping us get everything to our studio unit. My very special thanks to Rita, my 12th floor maid, who knows how I like my room and has it all ready for me when I arrive! And a special thank you to the Henry (aka Enrique) who made every day fun planning things for us to do around the pool. He's been well trained by fabulous Jose! Sergio, the GM, has done a great job with all the staff! All in all, a relaxing and enjoyable stay, and I'm already lookig forward to doing it again in 2026. And, hopefully, now that Sonesta Resorts has put their name on the property we'll see many new upgrades next year.

Wonderful quiet location!

24margarita (Calgary, Canada) on Mar 11, 2025

We thoroughly enjoyed our week at Costa Sur. Yes the property is dated but location is superb and clean. They are working on renovating! We had a suite on the 8th floor and views of whales and the sound o...f crashing waves could not be beat. This is the quietest resort we have ever enjoyed in the PV area. Bed was comfy and room was cleaned spotlessly every day by Yanet. Bathroom was large and shower worked well. Kitchenette came in handy for snacks. Daily bottled water would have been nice however we had no problem buying a big jug at the mini market in the lobby. Loved that we could hop on the local bus for 10 pesos to go into town (10 minutes) and explored Mismaloya and Boca de Tomatlan (20-30 minutes). Lots of great restaurants not far away. The Cascada restaurant on site was good and we had great service from Rafael, Mauricio and many others. Staff are simply wonderful! Only suggestion would be to have gluten free bread and buns available for those who need them. Staff were good at accomodating gluten free requests otherwise. We loved being able to swim on the beach in the sheltered lagoon. Only thing missing was a walkable beach. Note that when tides are high the beach is closed off. This happened one day of our stay.

Good Experience with a few Caveats

Tmurrayis (Surrey, Bc) on Mar 09, 2025

We stayed for 11 nights in late February 2025. Overall we enjoyed our stay but here are some specifics that might be helpful if you are considering this hotel. We chose it based on price and its location ...which we were hoping would be away from the action of downtown PV for some quiet but close enough to make easy trips for dinners, supplies and shopping. I think its location was a good balance in that regard. But be aware, it is a good 10 min drive to PV (80 -100 pesos with Uber) with bus service from a stop right across the road from the lobby (10 pesos cash to the drive whom will give change). There are no restaurants or off hotel shops nearby so your options for meals are heading to PV or being stuck with the hotel restaurant (more on that later). Costa Sur is on the ocean with sweeping views even for the lower floors (we had room 410). The layout of the hotel is somewhat dictated by the topography such that the lobby is actually on the 6th floor (there is a short walkway bridging the lobby to the adjacent road). From our room it was an elevator ride up to the lobby or down for the beach/pool/restaurant. Once settled into the room we found it spacious and functional. The king sized bed was OK, the kitchenette was somewhat supplied with the basics (I always bring along my chef’s knife). The coffee maker was welcome and worked well. I suggest you throw a few basket filters into your bag just in case there’s no supply. There is a two gas burner stovetop, a microwave and a toaster; all worked well. We ate at the restaurant a few times for both breakfast and dinner. The food was just OK but high priced for the quality. The menu was limited and you will want to venture into town for most meals where there is much better value and selection. We made a few light dinners in the room after getting supplies from PV; it was nice to have that option. There is a small store off the lobby which provides many basics. The prices are not outrageous from what I saw which was a pleasant surprise. Cold Pacifico beer was 30 pesos each. Getting a poolside lounger is a bit of a trick and even when one is early you will find people have plopped their towels down to make claim. It’s a bit frustrating given the hoarders might not ever actually use them. This is despite a notice asking people not to leave them vacant for more than an hour. Nobody paid any attention to that ask as far as I saw. It’s a silly game but prepare to be down there well before 9 AM for a spot in the sun. There are two pools; one in the sun and one tucked away behind the restaurant in the shade. Both were unbelievably warm, almost a hot tub experience. Forget being refreshed by a dip after laying in the sun, you will have to go down to the ocean for that. Next to Barefoot Bar there are two sets of stairs down to the small beach area (depending on the tide and surf the beach area may remain closed). We ditched the pool and opted for the lagoon area made by a breakwater installed some years ago. It leaves a calmer area to swim and even without snorkel gear you can see lots of fish swimming near the rocks. Space was always available on the beach and the staff were quick to set up loungers and umbrellas if needed. One bonus is the complete lack of roaming trinket hawkers which are everywhere in PV and can be a nuisance. The housekeeping services were top notch, a shoutout to Juanita whom was efficient, pleasant and accommodating. All of the front desk, bar and restaurant staff were focused on creating a great guest experience. Would we go back? Perhaps but unlikely, the building is tired the food was just meh and its proximity away from PV became a bit of chore. I think there are better options nearby or perhaps north of PV on the other side of the bay.
