Good...but for the money...

MikeL776 (Isla Mujeres, Mexico) on Apr 19, 2025

So I realize there are those who believe they are related to the owners and employees of this resort. For you, only read the first part of my review. For those trying to figure out where to spend their har...d earned dollars on an all-inclusive vacation, read the second part as well. My wife and I spent our honeymoon at Gran Bahia Coba 15 years ago, so we have a special place in our hearts for this resort. Having said that, we will probably not return. Overall Resort - It is a beautifully maintained resort. Very large (we like that as we need to walk and burn all the calories we consume) and between the manicured grass areas with the beautiful plants and flowers, combined with the Caribbean ocean, the aesthetics of this resort are well worth the money. Food - Good, not great. However, depending on who is cooking that day, you can get an exceptional meal at some of the ala carts. Everyone has different tastes and depending on what you order, it may seem phenomenal or awful at the same restaurant. The salmon at the Mediterranean ala carte is as good as I have ever eaten. The rest of the ala carts were....good. We only ate at the buffets at breakfast and lunch (except for 2 bad ala cart dinners we didn't finish). They were very busy when we were there and it was not worth navigating the crowds at breakfast, so we ate at the beach mini buffet allowed to Akumal guests. A highlight of the trip was the 2 hour breakfast we enjoyed as a live clarinet player entertained. Lunches were far less crowded as there were so many people at the beach during the day. You can always find something to eat and if you can't, you are the problem. Entertainment - The shows again will be to personal taste. Some are very good, others we left before it ended. It definitely fills the need of having something to do in the evenings. Staff - This is where some reviewers lose their perspective. The staff at Gran Bahia Luxury Akumal was excellent. I have stayed at over a dozen all-inclusive resorts in the Riviera Maya, and the staffs were amazing at all of them. So a wonderful staff is NOT what makes this resort unique. If you are not an obnoxious tourist, most staff members are very kind and helpful. The exception of a lousy staff member proves the rule. Easy way to get great service. Speak just a little Spanish. The staff members really appreciate when guests try to use the language of the country you are visiting. It doesn't have to be much, just spend a couple of days on duolingo to learn how to say thank you and please. Rooms - I will leave this for the second part of the review. So we had a wonderful time, because when you are married to the most amazing wife on the planet, who always has a positive attitude toward every situation, it is hard not to have a great time. So what's the problem? There are other resorts in the same price range that are nicer. That provide more bang for the buck. As I mentioned we spent our honeymoon here and have visited Gran Bahia about 1/2 dozen times. As a returning guest that earned us....nothing. I made 2 room requests (as close to beach as possible, top floor. I realize they can only provide what is available, but we were in the farthest building from the beach on the ground floor. As someone who has visited before, I expected just a little extra consideration. Why? Because the resort we stayed at for the second half of our trip did just that....for $500 less a week. I did make efforts at check-in to obtain a little extra as a multi-time returning guest over 15 years, but was told they had a new computer system that only had a few years of previous guest data, so.....oh well. Ok...so we didn't get the room requested, no big deal. One reason I booked Akumal was it was refurbished in the last couple of years. Not our building. Again, none of this makes Gran Bahia Principe a "bad" resort. You should still have a wonderful time, but when another resort we visit frequently automatically upgrades us to premier level privileges as a returning guest, and the food is....a little better. The entertainment is...a little better. The pools are...a little better. The ala carts are...a little better. The drinks are...a little ....wait they were a lot better. As was the beach. We had a fantastic time at the Premier Coba lobby and bar before Covid. Now it is just closed. Nothing going on. Made me kinda' sad. So if you are Canadian (Canadians LOVE Gran Bahia Principe, and they are a really fun group of people that seem to make up about 1/2 the guests during the winter months), you should book your trip to Gran Bahia and be assured you should have a wonderful time. Everyone else, there are better options for the same price...or less.

Last Day Here — And We’ve Never Been So Sick in Our Lives We’re wrapping up our stay at Bahía Príncipe Luxury Akumal, and to be honest, we’ve never been more ready to leave. This has been one of the most ...disappointing travel experiences we’ve ever had. From day one, customer service has been virtually nonexistent. It genuinely feels like the staff couldn’t care less about the guests or their experience. The room? Outdated, musty, and uncomfortable. The smell hits you the moment you walk in, and the bathroom is just as bad. It’s clear that maintenance and cleanliness aren’t a priority here. But the worst part by far — we’ve been incredibly sick for most of our trip. We've never experienced this level of illness while traveling, and it’s completely ruined what was supposed to be a relaxing vacation. Whether it’s the food or hygiene standards, something is seriously wrong. Calling this place a “luxury” resort is laughable. Everything about it feels neglected and subpar. We’re beyond disappointed, and we’ll never be booking with Bahía Príncipe again — nor would we ever recommend it to anyone.
