True Canadian Review !

kpmacleod11 (Calgary, Canada) on Apr 04, 2025

First let me state the lay out of the resort is great and the beach is incredible, but thats about it. 1st 2 mornings we were there, the concierges called our room between 7:30- 8am. Do they not know we a...re on vacation? Then you had to go see them to reserve your dinners and then they try to 'trick' you into a RCI Time share presenation by offering you a 'Premier' Breakfast, free of Charge..hahaha. The pool is nice BUT , unless you are 7' tall, bring floaties for the pool because most is the pool is over 6ft deep, unless you want to hang around the one shallow end with all the kids. Made it 3.5 days before getting food poisining and then couldnt eat for the next 3.5 days of my vacation. Pretty sure it was from the food at the Beach snack bar. So beware. We stayed in the Family suite. Was not to bad other than there was one single outlet to plug things into in the whole suite. 90% of the outlets in the room did not work. Check out. The gentlemen that 'helped' us, did not even acknowledge us, did not ask how our stay was nothing, just handed me a piece of paper showing I checked out...WOW. Customer service Fail. Will not be going back to this resort again or recommending to anyone

Large party organization disaster

Mccloudy9 (Toronto, Canada) on Apr 04, 2025

My wife and I got married here, here’s how it went Upon first glance, organization was top notch. Before even meeting, they required if our guests would like their steaks medium, medium rare, or well don...e. We planned for a wedding, and they weren’t leaving a stone unturned. We were impressed. Or so we thought… Our check in was a disaster. Absolute failure on grand sirenis’s behalf. We arrived, and just waited, and waited. It was like we didn’t exist, rooms weren’t ready, it was like they weren’t aware there was a big party of 50 arriving. They weren’t aware nor prepared in any way shape or form. There was a staff member that started walking around with a clipboard with names asking who was all here. We asked them what is the purpose of this? Aren’t we supposed to have a private check in as it’s included in our package? They replied “what package?” Which made us felt immediately ignored and not of any priority. After an hour and a half of our families waiting we started getting a little frustrated so we approached a random desk to ask what was going on. The gentleman said we’d have to contact Kircady or Stephanie to find out more. Our wedding coordinators. They dialed the coordinators, and then handed my wife the phone. That really upset us as we are here for a wedding vacation, and not here to coordinate something they should’ve been prepared for. If their goal was to make 50 people truly feel invisible, hats off to them. The lobby was uncomfortably hot, but around 2 hours after arrival we were finally checked in. It took some of our friends and family 3 hours to check in. Now it’s time to give luggage tickets to the bell boy. This process was very confusing as they just let us find out on our own what the next step was. We were under the impression we were going to hop on a golf cart with our luggage and go to our block. That was a very inaccurate assumption. After standing around out front for 20 mins wondering what’s going on again, a man takes our suitcases, loads them on a luggage cart and continues to crush our luggage with 10 plus other bags on top. We asked the man to stop, take it off, we have glass and breakables. Which he simply ignored, and just kept walking with our stuff. We have no idea where we’re going at this point, I guess to our rooms? At this point there’s no doubt about it, we are kind of worked up. The man decided to share no words or actions when we asked “are you listening? Can you please stop?”. We get our room, which is on the second floor, quite the opposite of what was requested. They insisted on upgrading us to an ocean view, which was not the case. You couldn’t see an ocean at all. There was a huge palm tree outside that was very close, blocking each angle of view. We found that very cheesy as it was not practical at all. On the second day, we hoped that customer service goes better than check in. We have our appointment with Stephanie. The lead wedding coordinator. Stephanie was not present as we had to contact her to tell her we are here for our appointment. She showed up about 30 mins later. That was annoying, as they knew we had this planned. We sat and discussed our package, where she then informed us that the flowers they offer in their packages do not reflect the hotel. This is a 3rd party service, that requires cash. We were now concerned where these funds were coming from as we didn’t plan for that. The last thing we wanted to do was worry about how we’re going to pay for things. Due to extensive emails and confirmations, there were no hidden fees. We strongly feel that if we didn’t show up with a portfolio with quotes and important details highlighted, there would have been the opportunity to pull the wool over our eyes. Stephanie showed us the areas where we could have our ceremony. We chose a covered area by the pool. We requested the ceiling fans be on as it is hot, they agreed. The wedding day came, and that request was ignored. We were informed only at the time of the ceremony that they were broken, however we witnessed them in operation the day before. We found the rooms, and outdoor greenery quite nice. The beds were comfy. Rooms were clean. The grounds flood, terribly. When raining, Water has a hard time receding from walking and path areas. Most of these flood areas aren’t illuminated, so you’d be walking in deep puddles at night and have wet feet on the way to where you were going. The roofs leak, really bad. We had guests with leaks the whole time, other family had water coming down the walls, we had water pouring from a pot light. Nobody was moved rooms, everyone had to deal with it on their own. My wife and I were dumping buckets, other family were dumping buckets and soaking up water with towels. On another note, we had one of our guests shower head come blasting off, and hitting them in the head, when they were showering one evening. The size of the resort is quite large, I wouldn’t recommend anyone with mobility issues to attend this hotel. We were disregarded when asking for ground floor rooms for ourselves and others with mobility issues. These guests had to rent a mobility scooter, and yet the hotel still had them walking up sets of stairs for a week. That was quite perplexing. We personally found two staff members that were always joyful, helpful, and always ensured you weren’t going without. That was quite shocking, since there is a lot of staff at this hotel. Most didn’t show that welcoming feeling. We found most of the food to be enjoyable. Habachi and Italian were the better meals. Burgers at the beach bar were raw. Always. We found the a la cartes to be very inconsistent with the quality and flavour of the food, as we tried the same restaurants twice and had completely different tasting meals when ordering the same thing. Our biggest issue with the a la cartes was that when they accept bookings for 9 - 930, they stop cooking food. They literally stop making the meals you’ve booked your party in for. We found this to be terrible habit because it happened at every late reservation they offered, and you were very limited to what you were able to order. We had 2 guests one evening at the French restaurant that simply weren’t served, because their steaks were “forgotten”. We were not pleased with the stray cats in the Brazilian restaurant. The staff did absolutely nothing about it. We did not wish to eat with begging animals at our feet. That was not appreciated. Drinks were very inconsistent. I got cold sores off the cups, something I never get. I used a travel mug for the remainder of my time. We understand this is a family resort but we were quite underwhelmed when the pool bars were swarmed with children, occupying every bar stool. We watched multiple children take alcohol off the bar. Seemed a little too welcoming with children around booze. We found service lacked when speaking English. We noticed Spanish speaking people served more on a priority basis. Most time, service was less than satisfactory. You had long waits, or sometimes were ignored. Our table was given away at the buffet by a server once we had our belongings on it. That was upsetting. Our belongings were now on another table and it seemed like the staff had no issue with moving our things, like it was completely fine to do. This also happened to my parents. The service at the buffets were pretty poor, we always had to refill our own water or find our own cutlery and other table items. A la carte reservations were always later than what you booked, usually 30 mins wait time. If you booked for 9:30, expect to be seated at 10. At that point, we’d just want to go to bed, knowing the available menu was shortening by the minute. Maintenance service was very poor. When trying to fix our leak they just put a bag in the ceiling and just prolonged and worsen the issue, which we still had to deal with 2 minutes after the “fix”. This was a horrible way to spend our last night, as we had to cancel our reservations with family and friends to attend their disaster, in their room, that we didn’t want, nor request. Room service was absolutely atrocious. You’re told an hour, then told to wait, wait, and wait some more. It took 2 hours to get a hot dog and ham and cheese sandwich. We also had other guests not receive dinner on another occasion, through room service. It would’ve been more appreciated had they just said they’re closed for the night, and not taking orders or not making food, exactly like their a la carte restaurants do. We were intruded in on twice by housekeeping. The second occasion, we were both in the nude and it became very vocal and clear to leave the room, when they did not. On the second attempt of vocalizing “get the **** out of here!!!” That was successful. We informed the front desk and our wedding coordinators, however they didn’t seem to care much. We found this extremely uncomfortable, unprofessional, and unacceptable. The coordinators wanted to do something nice for us and our guests so they asked us how dinner sounded at the habachi restaurant. We agreed, arranged a date and time and informed all of our guests. All 48 of them. The following day they messaged us and tell us it’s scheduled a different day now. We found this disheartening, as they couldn’t even get a dinner reservation right. We then had to cancel with all family and friends, and they had to rearrange their plans and dinners for that night. We were looking forward to that. That was too bad. The arrangement of the ceremony was nice. They played the incorrect song that was requested for our wedding party to walk down the aisle. We will never get that moment back. However, the most hurtful thing was that our ring box went missing. We believe the more appropriate word was stolen. It was placed in front of the centrepiece, and then never to be mentioned of again. When we requested it to be returned, stephanie informed us it was in her office, in her possession. She then strongly assures us that nothing is missing, or misplaced. She claims she has it all. Moments later, she tells us she cannot find it. This was very sentimental to us, and we feel like it was a blatant lie. We feel like sirenis does this quite often, since we’ve seen posts about it in groups about this resort, the typical case of ring boxes going missing. Very weird reoccurring case of the ring box that walked away. We also had a vape stolen out of our room. As we were checking out, we had the outstanding bill for the flowers. Over the course of the week with all of the inconveniences, we asked if we could have the amount reduced, or if anything could be done in correlation to the hotel apologizing and us paying a bill. This request was a complete catastrophe. They did not want to help, nor own up to their mistakes. We found their reaction to be shocking, like they had gone above and beyond for us which was not the case. We paid the bill in full and ensured the staff and Stephanie we would never return. While sharing our foul experiences, Stephanie would talk louder over us, try to cut us off and not hear us out. At this point we looked at her and said “we’ve heard enough” and end the conversation there. We understand that every hotel is going to have their quirks and issues, as we’ve stayed in multiple different properties. However, cumulatively there were simply too many issues especially regarding something that’s been extensively planned for over a year, something very important to two people choosing to get married here. We would strongly discourage guests to book at grand sirenis, if the idea is to have any large events, weddings or parties. Due to the fact these departments cannot accommodate, coordinate, and organize such things in a proper, professional fashion.
