Mixed bag - service, amenity, accommodation issues

brmusicman (Chicago, Illinois) on May 23, 2025

It's a mixed bag. This hotel used to be a favorite of mine. The rooms were gorgeous, the service was great, and there was a lovely club lounge. For the second time, this visit revealed a hotel that's on...ly okay. Service has declined substantially in quality, the club lounge is permanently closed (which devalues the hotel, particularly, for World of Hyatt 'globalists'), and elements of the hotel are in bad shape. Service issues: --I arrived early and my room wasn't yet ready. That's understandable (though no effort was made to switch me to a room that was). I was told by the agent that my room was in "final inspection" and I'd get a call/text in about 20-30 minutes. Over an hour later, I returned to the desk, not having been called. A different agent quickly verified the room was indeed ready. Why make a promise you don't plan on keeping? --I had lunch at the lobby restaurant, and the service was atrocious. The bartender had a bad attitude an, upon handing me a menu, then disappeared for nearly 20 minutes. The same thing happened when I wanted the check. Why serve lunch if you don't have staff to handle it? I was in a 'casita' room this visit. Its condition was variable. While it's a nice accommodation in theory, several tiles were broken, a smell of raw sewage occasionally permeated the room, light switches were broken off and yellowed, couch cushions were placed with their seams outward (seemingly to hide stains), etc. It was 'clean' and had some modern furnishings, but it was also past its prime in terms of its physical condition. The fitness center suffered from some of the same problems. One of the bikes was just totally broken (with no signage to indicate this) and other equipment has seen better days. The hotel lacks attention to detail as well. For example, the meeting rooms all have signs that advertise the hotel's restaurants; these indicate Oystercatchers serves dinner to 10pm. You then get a handout at check-in saying Oystercatchers serves dinner until 9pm. One of the more pleasant aspects of this hotel used to be its nature walk that connected the main building to the casita areas. This was ruined, it seems, by last year's hurricanes. The walk now is now through parking lots, which makes staying in the casitas less attractive. The gift shop is a little silly. It's open at random hours (be ready for the "back in 15 min. sign") and the pricing is ABSURD. I mean, I get that a hotel gift shop has a slight upcharge for convenience, but a small bottle of sun lotion was $30! The same bottle is $10.99 at CVS. That kind of upcharge (which was not limited to sunblock) is just silly. Overall, it's a fine enough hotel, but knowing what it used to be, it's sad to see the decline in amenities, physical plant, and service. I wouldn't call it a Grand Hyatt any longer.

Good location for access to Tampa Bucks stadium.

steve T on May 20, 2025

Overall great experience. First time to this hotel. But am a loyal Hyatt member. I use the World of Hyatt credit card and have enjoyed quite a few free nights and upgrades. Hyatt always treats me like a ...valued customer wherever I may be staying.

Fastest check in on the west coast of Florida! Beautiful views of Tampa and Gulf of America. Easy access from airport and Clearwater. Rooms were clean and up to date, bathrooms as well. Two restaurants on ...property as well as a good size lobby bar.
