perfect mother daughter trip

Carolyn B on Apr 19, 2025

I was here with my 10-year-old daughter April 4-8, and we had the best time ever! This was a special once in a lifetime trip for her and me, where none of her siblings got to go (this time). Her request wa...s a vacation with a good beach, and so we chose Dreams Sands because of the beach. The water was warm, the beach mostly sandy with only a tiny bit of seaweed. No water shoes needed. The roped off area was quite shallow, which gave us lots of space to float, play in the waves, and swim. We had booked a trip to Akumal and it was cancelled on two different days because of high winds, but on those days at the resort we only had fun waves to splash in. So the beach here must be sheltered from the wind to some degree? The one con I would give this resort is the lack of shaded seating at both the beach and the pools. I don't want to have to wake up at 6am to "reserve" a seat (AKA put a towel and a book on a chair and then hope it was still there after breakfast) and then stay there all day to keep the chair. This was a major issue for us, because my 10 year old wanted to play in the water and look for shells for a long time, and we are both coming off of 6 months of Canadian winter. Despite all the swim shirts, hats and sunscreen we could find, we NEEDED shade if we were going to be in the pool or at the beach all day. This is the one thing that would make me hesitate to come back. One morning we did get up early and save some seats, and then got to watch the drama unfold in the preferred section while one lady yelled at the concierge "don't EVER do that again!" and threw a towel at him, while another person was complaining about sunscreen getting stolen from the stuff they had left on their chair, and person after person walking around looking for somewhere to sit and then complaining about it. How can you relax when there is so much tension about chairs all around you? We ended up spending a lot of time in the pools during the hottest time of the day, where we could find enough shade from building and trees. Because we couldn't find chairs, we would just set our stuff and shoes at the side of the pool and then go in. As far as whether preferred is worth it or not, for me, if would not have been. I don't care to fight with entitled people over chairs and I personally didn't have a need for premium liquor or a lounge. And I fly premium/business class, use private transportation, and use airport lounges so I am not afraid to pay more for a better service. For me, preferred did not seem like something I needed or wanted. We spent most of our time in the pool with the swim up bar. Antonio was our bartender most days, and he was amazing! You will not be disappointed if you order his mango margarita with a tahin rim. On days when the bar was packed with people from a large wedding or graduation, he moved FAST to get everyone's orders taken and made. And when it was less busy, he would chat with us and move a little slower. My 10-year-old LOVED asking for Shirley Temples or pina colada's with extra grenadine, and he remembered her favourites after just one or two orders and would greet her with "what can I get you, Princess?" He was one of the staff members that made our trip amazing! My daughter would ask to go to that pool and his bar, just so she could order drinks from Antonio. The pool next to the swim up bar with the roped off sections and deep end was fun too, and the main pool was often busy and as many reviews said, missing tiles. So we skipped that one. The other two we went in the most were great! Warm, and lost of space to play games and dive for the rings we brought with us. I have been to probably around 10 resorts in my life, and I would say the buffet food was in the top 2. I almost never chose a food that ended up tasting bad, and there were lots of options. The mussels in cream sauce were soooooo good! My 10-year-old can often have some anxiety about eating in restaurants on vacation because you never know if what you order will be what you expect, or what to do if you don't like what you've ordered. She LOVED the buffet for the variety and the CAKE!! We did not eat at any of the other restaurants. The staff were consistently polite, friendly, and helpful at the buffet and even a lineup of 20 people were seated within less than 5 minutes. So if you see a line, don't panic! Even though the resort is quite small, the shows were great! My daughter loved the acrobats/pirate show and the pop stars show. She also joined a bracelet making activity, and a silent disco. The entertainment was great, and my daughter just loved every single activity she tried. Last but not least - the Explorers Club. On our second day we decided to go check it out. I was expecting not to use the child care at all, because it was just my daughter and me on this trip, so I didn't need child care for a date night or anything else. She asked if she could join a lego activity one evening, and she LOVED it. The staff were SO good with her. I asked them to write down their names for me and then lost the card they wrote them on, so I can't say what their names were. One of them was quite short with braces, and her and her team member were so kind and amazing to my daughter. She stayed for dinner and a movie one other evening at the Explorer's club, and did one other activity one day as well. They have a schedule of events parents can take a look at for the next day to choose when to bring their children, and parents are given a buzzer (similar to what restaurants often give when you wait for a table), so if you child wants you to come back sooner or needs anything from you, they can contact you. Our room was average. The beds were comfortable, the room was clean and everything (plumbing, AC etc) worked well. We got an ocean view, but I'm not sure I would pay for it again. We were barely in our room, aside from sleeping. Overall, this was an amazing trip and I would definitely go back. If they added more seating and more beach umbrellas or shade, I wouldn't hesitate for even a second to go back. It was the trip of a lifetime for us!!

Wonderful Stay with a Few Areas for Improvement

EmilyMiami (Miami) on Apr 19, 2025

The stay in Dreams Sands was a really great experience. The Resort's Common areas are clean, accessible, and safe. The Staff was amazing: always friendly, courteous, respectful, and ready to help at all ti...mes. A big Thanks to Carmen and Michelle (Concierge Team), they were super helpful and approachable. To Aurelio (Pool Bartender), simply outstanding. His customer service was Top-notch. The Beach: stunning. The pools, not very large, but nice and convenient. Areas for Improvement: 1. Room: The ocean view was spectacular, but the Bathroom safety could be improved. There was no intermediate step to get into the bathtub: the edge was quite high (around 24 in or more), which poses a risk of slipping. Also, the grab bars inside the tub weren't positioned in the most helpful spots to prevent falls. 2. Restaurants: Often have wait times of over 45 minutes. 3. Outdoor Activities: could be better planned or offer more variety. Despite those details, it was a very good stay, and the service really made the difference.
