Resort Review

SintaFHTX on Aug 10, 2024

Our recent stay at the Iberostar resort was enjoyable overall, with some highlights and areas that could be improved. Here’s a breakdown of our experience: **Resort & Amenities** The resort is well-designed, not too large, and easy to navigate. We appreciated the variety of pools, many of which offered great views of the kids from multiple angles. However, the pool will need to be re-plastered as the pool floor was crumbling. The proximity of the kids’ club was a big plus, allowing us to drop off and pick up our children as needed throughout the day based on the schedule of activities. The lobby featured updated decor, though some areas and the elevators were uncomfortably hot. Also, there were two ping pong tables. We would have loved a sports room like Fiesta had where the kids could play billiards, air hockey, etc. Our room was pleasant, with a nice ocean view, though it could get noisy due to the entertainment in the pool and lobby areas. If you’re looking for a quieter experience, it might be worth requesting a room farther from the lobby. The staff were friendly, particularly with the kids, although the sales pitch for membership upon arrival was a bit of a nuisance. Housekeeping could have been better; they missed refilling our soap and water bottles, though there were convenient water and ice stations nearby. Another guest mentioned that this resort is considered the “middle tier” among Iberostar properties, which seems accurate. **Beach** The beach was a stunning aqua color, with plenty of opportunities for shell hunting. Also, wish we took advantage of walking out to see the sea turtles as I hear they can be seen there early mornings and evenings. The water was rough on some days, which may not be ideal for small children. One day, the waves were particularly strong, leading to some unexpected mishaps, like my husband losing his sunglasses while playing with our son in the surf. **Dining** The food was a bit of a letdown. Restaurant options were limited, especially for picky eaters, though the food truck and room service did offer kid-friendly options like chicken tenders and hotdogs. The buffet could have been managed better. They didn’t have a second omelette station two days and the lines for eggs were long. Their pre-made eggs looked awful. Out of the three Cancun resorts we’ve visited, we’d rank the food at Finest Playa Mujeres the best, followed by Fiesta Americana. Only one restaurant, the Hibachi, required reservations, but it ended up being our least favorite due to limited options and questionable sushi. Arriving right when the restaurants opened at 5:30 PM helped us avoid long waits, but service was slow at times. On a positive note, the ice cream, churros, and drinks bar were a hit with our kids. **Kids Club** The kids’ club was a major highlight for us. Although Fiesta Americana’s kids’ club is larger, our daughter preferred the one at Iberostar because it was less structured, allowing her to connect more deeply with other children. Our son made fast friends and spent three days playing with them non-stop. While we were initially annoyed that we had to pay extra for the pirate and pajama parties at night, it turned out to be worth it as the kids loved these events, and we enjoyed two evenings to ourselves. The babysitters were kind and patient, particularly with our son, who can be a handful at times. The kids enjoyed various activities, including arts and crafts and exploring the resort. **Entertainment** The shows at the resort was a bit underwhelming. Wished they started before 9:30pm as the kids were on a bit of a sleep deficit!?? However, I did like that the shows were in a covered area. The issue we ran into at Fiesta was the shows got cut short when a thunder storm rolled through. At Finest, we enjoyed both the kids’ and general shows, but Iberostar had only two shows we liked during our stay. The kids shows were trying to be more educational. There were two shows featuring the same singers. Some of the poolside singers were better. The kids had fun on Mexican night with piñatas and games. While we did not take advantage of the activities, the entertainment staff did a good job keeping things interesting with water polo, yoga, Zumba and boot camp classes. I was excited to see they had a pickle ball court but it was only open 9:30am. **Excursions** Unfortunately, we didn’t go on the excursion we had planned. Our 8-year-old daughter became very upset the morning of, and we decided it wasn’t worth the battle, so we transferred the excursion to another family we had befriended. **Overall Experience** Although there were a few drawbacks, we had a pleasant stay at Iberostar. Traveling with our two kids, a 5-year-old and an 8-year-old, may have made our experience unique compared to others. However, if you're sensitive to heat, be aware that the hotel lobby and elevator were brutally hot in August.
