Slice of Heaven

Christine A on Sep 27, 2024

Fairmont Orchid was one of the best hotels I have ever stayed at. From the moment I drove up to the valet, the customer service was outstanding. The bellboys, David specifically, were all welcoming, friendly, attentive, Juliana at the front desk was the same as well, extremely kind and helpful when we checked in. All the staff I encountered during my stay provided outstanding service. Cleanliness was also top notch, all restaurants I dined at were delicious! The pool area is also amazing! I will definitely come back.

A Nearly Perfect Property

mtjtkd (Tucson, Arizona) on Sep 24, 2024

A nearly perfect property. It was our 50th Anniversary trip and the hotel upgraded us to a full suite at no extra charge. The grounds are immaculate and the staff is polite and professional on every level. The pool area is perfect and I think this is the only resort on the Big Island with a readily accessible sand beach. If I have any small criticism, it is that I think the resort needs a sort of coffee shop/lunch spot. The restaurants were all good, but there wasn't really just a casual, eat anytime place among them.

Be careful when booking a view.

Our second stay in two years. Staff were great. Service was great. Room…not so great. The “partial ocean view” we had last stay was exactly that, and beautiful…our room this year was disappointing. We were actually told when we checked in that if we went to the corner of our second floor balcony and “leaned hard” we could see the water. When we tried to redress, there were zero other options. When we checked out the staff agreed this wasn’t a view room. Did it ruin our trip? No, but we definitely wouldn’t have paid more for a view that didn’t exist.

Very impressive hotel and service!

Spent 4 nights at the Fairmont Orchid; this was my first visit but had been to the Kea Lani prior and loved it, so wanted to check out the Orchid. Greeted at the door and shown where to self-park my car. Escorted up to the Gold lounge for check-in which was quick and easy. Juliana at the Gold lounge gave me an orientation to the resort, brief tour of the lounge, and walked me to my room. Was excited to have gotten an upgrade to an ocean view room. Room: plenty of space, very clean. Housekeeping was timely and excellent, addressed me by name, did usual cleaning and offered turndown service. Nice view from the 6th floor of the ocean and adjacent golf course, lanai with table + 2 chairs + lounge chair with small side table. Room furniture is a little dated and scuffed, but I believe they have a refresh planned soon. Chiller was nice to store drinks, and 2 nice refillable water bottles provided with water stations everywhere. Towels, sheets, Le Labo toiletries were all great! Lounge: the Gold floor lounge was excellent for breakfast/evening canapes and complimentary non-alcoholic drinks available all day (alcohol paid honor bar if you want). The team was excellent and kept everything well-stocked, gave us a 10-min "last call" before packing up the food, and kept the dessert trays out until the lounge closed. More than enough food, but also enough variety for our 4 day stay. Lounge balconies with nice view of water and sunset if you don't want to go down to the oceanfront. Grounds/Pool: Grounds were lovingly maintained and gorgeous. Pool was large and sometimes busy, but I was always able to get a chair. Easy towel service available. Plenty of other places to sit including for sunset. Short paved path that you can walk by the water, but know that it is just along the Orchid grounds - no paved connection to other resorts, but you can bushwhack a bit in the sand. There is a small cove and beach, but know that it is mostly for snorkeling - only a few feet of sandy area in the water followed by reefs that you should not walk on. It's protected cove so very few waves if that is what you are looking for, but amazing for snorkeling. Service: everyone was wonderful and kind. Did self-parking so did not use the valet. Self-park is about a 3 min walk and convenient in and out and included in the resort fee. I did not try any of the other restaurants given access to the Gold lounge. Random other nice amenity - complimentary washer/dryer and detergent. I did a load of laundry which was very helpful on a weeklong trip to 2 islands. Overall: I would definitely return. Fairmont service is top notch and the convenience of the gold floor was well-worth the extra investment. Very excited to visit again!

Premium Price Tag, Subpar Service

Courtney1281 (Los Angeles, California) on Sep 14, 2024

We stayed at the resort from August 30, 2024 thru September 6. Premium price tag with subpar service. Would not recommend this resort as the price doesn’t meet value. I would not recommend this resort. Beautiful resort. Excellent manicured gardens and grounds. Free self parking is a nice perk. Short drive from the airport but it’s a secluded resort away from any outside activities. On check in, reception did not mention activity schedule. Didn’t find out about activities until day before departure. Aqua aerobics and one free hour of snorkel hear was nice. The pool can become crowded at high times but the staff will remove items after some time. Seeing turtles in the protected on the beach was nice to see. Also sunsets from the pool area are amazing. Arrived to find a bug on bed. Checked using the provided iron and no bed bugs. Sheets immediately changed by housekeeping. Called housekeeping 2 additional times to deliver the included water bottle to be left in the room since the hotel no longer offers bottled water. The Luau was excellent. Again, the price was high ($180/pp) but alcoholic drinks are included and there were plenty of delicious food options. The entertainment, both the host and dancers were excellent. I Would recommend this luau. Unorganized arrival. 5:30pm start time but not allowed into the venue until 5:30pm exactly caused long line at entrance. Could have played games and mingled instead of waiting. Breakfast. Only one sit down restaurant for such a large resort. Buffet style. 20 minute wait for seating. Not acknowledged by hostess on arrival. Basic breakfast fare not worth the high price tag. Stop at the market at the entrance of the resort area to stock up on drinks and snacks All restaurants are closed by 8pm. One Tuesday night only one restaurant was open at 7pm. The food at the Japanese style restaurant was not quality food or worth the cost. Room service menu is limited and items are expensive PLUS an $8 delivery fee and 23% gratuity. Three of us traveled for my best friend’s birthday. Her hubby called wanting cake/a gift to be left in the room. Hubby called several times with no luck as the hotel never answered his call.
