Despite mediocre food and a few glitches we had a great time at Joia. But you should probably go somewhere else.

My wife and I vacationed with another couple, whose friend goes to Joia every year and we went based on that recommendation. While the resort itself has a lot to like - the proximity to a well-maintained beach, several pools and beautiful grounds - the mediocrity of the food is enough for me to suggest that you might want to consider a different resort for considerably less money. At first blush, our room seemed decent enough. It was pretty large with enough drawer and cubby space to unpack all our clothes. The bathroom had a double sink, and both a stall shower and hot tub. But there were issues. First, we had a leak from the A/C ducts into our closet. While our outstanding butler, Valentin, made sure it was remedied quickly, the leak reappeared two days later. Second, the rooms need to be modernized. Most hotels nowadays provide outlets and USB ports near both sides of the bed. We didn't even have an available outlet near either side. A small quibble, but I'd expect better from a premium resort. The check-in process wasn't ideal, either. While my room was ready, unfortunately our friends' room wasn't ready at the stated check-in time. Not cool. Now onto the most disappointing part of Joia: The tasteless food. I will say that I appreciate the cleanliness of the buffets (where we had breakfast, lunches and a couple of dinners) as well as the variety. I also like how they didn't make huge quantities of any one food available - instead, smaller quantities of each food is quickly replenished and doesn't look picked over. But being in the Dominican Republic I would have expected the food to have some flavor and spice. It didn't. Most everything (especially the meats and poultry) was overcooked and bland. For whatever reason, even the freshly prepared omelettes had no taste. We went to a couple of restaurants - the steak house twice (decent, but nothing to write home about - the rib eye was about the grisliest I've ever had) and the Italian restaurant (meh). The service at the bars was expeditious, even at the pool's swim-up bar. But if you sit outside the lobby bar and get table service for your drinks, prepare to wait. Tipping a few bucks should get you better service, but even so we sometimes didn't see our server again and someone different would serve us. Beach/pool: I got up pretty early to reserve a couple of huts on the beach. From observation, the pool cabanas have much higher demand, meaning getting a prime spot is somewhat competitive. There are lots of activities going on throughout the day. My wife and I enjoyed the exercise class in the pool. Night life: TBH, we only went to one show (dancing) - and that was enough. While the cast danced their hearts out - and most every dance was frenetic - it wasn't what you'd consider top-notch entertainment. To wrap up: We had a great time at Joia despite a few hiccups. Being an adults-only resort was appreciated. With that said, I know from experience (I've been to the DR a number of times and probably 20+ all-inclusives overall) that you can pay less for an equally outstanding resort - with better food. ;-)
Great Resort!

We really enjoyed our stay. The resort had everything we could ask for. We used the beach daily but there is a nice pool as well. Very clean and workers were so kind. Our maid, Rosa, was fabulous! Our butler and assistant, Alex & Caesar were also great. They took care of all of our needs. The food was good, especially Hibachi. Buffet had a lot of options as well. No complaints during our stay! We would come again!
