Disappointing Experience – Not the Relaxing Getaway We Expected

This was our first time visiting Puerto Vallarta (we usually go to Cabo), and sadly, we won’t be returning—at least not to Secrets Vallarta Bay. The overall vibe of the resort was underwhelming. Though it...'s marketed as adults-only, it felt more like a seniors-only environment. We were looking forward to relaxing by the pool, but the atmosphere was noisy and far from peaceful (some Dreams guests would be on Adult side, but without kids). On top of that, there was virtually no entertainment on the adult side. After 10pm, the place was dead—except for one decent show on Thursday, there was nothing worth staying up for. The restaurants were just okay. A plus: no reservations required. However, their app's listed restaurant hours and openings were completely inaccurate, and to our surprise, the two main restaurants were closed on Saturday! Seriously? The buffet on the adults-only side was only open for breakfast, so we tried the buffet on the Dreams (family) side. Big mistake—both the food and service there were disappointing. Poolside service was actually a highlight—staff were friendly, attentive, and spoke English well, unlike other parts of the resort. Unfortunately, we were approached twice by staff pitching timeshare tours, but they weren’t upfront about it. It felt sneaky and off-putting. Not cool. Our room was fine but clearly worn and tired. One day, housekeeping completely missed our room and came by after we had left for dinner. When we returned, we found the door left ajar! Thankfully, our friends were staying next door, and we were the last room on the hall—otherwise this could have been a serious security issue. Food hygiene was another letdown. I picked up a sandwich from the Barefoot Grill and saw staff handling tomatoes with bare hands—no gloves, no utensils. I tossed it right away. Not surprisingly, the night before our departure, I came down with the worst stomach flu, a first for me! Spouse got it too. Took us several days to recover. All in all, this resort did not live up to expectations. Between the dated rooms, misleading info, lackluster food, poor hygiene, and zero nighttime energy, it was a big letdown. Secrets Vallarta Bay is off our list for good.
