No longer a "Dream" hotel

Having visited this hotel before when it was under the "Dreams" hotels, we thought it would still be as good now it was a "Hilton" hotel, but how wrong we were. The one thing that hasn't changed is the st...aff, they are still amazing and really want you to have the best time while you are there, but the rest is a very poor second to what it was. We decided to upgrade to the Enclave section, and to be honest it really wasn't worth the extra money. The "exclusive" reception area is very small with seating areas that should seat around 5 people but you get people just laying on the furniture so they end up just having 2 people around them. That means that you either end up standing up having a drink/food or having to leave the area. Smaller tables/chairs would make it work much better. The food within this area is very limited and is practically the same every day. Our room was really small, no whirlpool bath, no seating area, other than 2 dining chairs, only one plug socket and two USB points, the room was very tired and in desperate need of decoration, the doors and skirting around the bathroom had all rotted away. The room was cleaned to a very high standard, and the cleaners/maids were lovely and worked really hard. They ensured that our room was always made-up and the mini bar well stocked, if we needed anything extra it was never a problem. The area around the "Enclave" pool could have been lovely, if it wasn't for the booming music every day, which no-one really appreciated. It got even worse when at around 3pm every day a dj turned up to "have a party", this may be ok in a 18-30 hotel, but not for a 5 star hotel. The staff that worked the bar and pool area were amazing and kept a smile on their faces, even in the rain storms. The beach was spotless and kept clean, but again the Enclave area was tiny with not enough sunbeds. We chose to use a different part of the beach for this reason, and the service etc was no different. The restaurants are nowhere near as good as before, the menu's are pretty much the same in each of them and with the exception of the French and Seafood one the food is really poor. What is even more disappointing is that we were in the adults only section. The adult only buffet was excellent for breakfast and lunch, but was then not open in the evening, which meant if you just wanted a quick snack in the buffet you had to go to the family buffet, which was similar to a school canteen with no guarantee that when you returned to your table, there would not be someone else sitting at it, even if your drinks were already there. The other issue, which we have never experienced in a 5 star hotel, is that they charge you $10.00 to have room service delivered to your room!!!!! Surely after paying to upgrade to Enclave and being a 5 star this should cover this. This hotel is still a lovely place to stay, but compared to before it fell way short and I am not sure we would return. If you have a hotel which is at the top of it's game, why change it??? Especially if it makes it worse and not better. One final point, there appeared to be various managers etc walking around the resort, but they don't talk to the guests, maybe if they did, then the points above could be addressed and the hotel would return to the standards it use to have. It is also not great to be constantly harassed by "playa" staff trying to get you to buy another holiday etc, you go on holiday to relax and we found we spent most of our time trying to avoid them, as they did not like to take no for an answer. We are aware that it will become a Hyatt Hotel in October so maybe they will take notice of the reviews.

Hilton la Romana is a great 4* hotel, it has a lovely location, nice beach and grounds, some of the rooms could do with a refresh but overall it is a very nice place to stay. We have frequented all the res...taurants a Nd can recommend the noor and mare as the best. The buffet is a bit strange where everything is behind glass and you have to request what you want. Not the worst thing but can cause queues at busy times. The bar areas are good in the main reception with Julia and Casandra deserving high praise. All in all a good place to stay.

Enclave pool bar is so fun

Make sure to check out Olga and Jose at the Enclave pool bar. Excellent service. The passion fruit margaritas are a must and if you are feeling bold take a shot of Mama Juana. Their concoction is the best.... Always positive, happy and full of energy.

Best experience

We were here for many celebrations. Retirement anniversary, birthday, victor treated us like complete VIP. He sent us notifications of daily activities, found us wherever we were to bring us a cooler of dr...inks, plates of fruit etc. he made our reservations for excursions. Such as boat cruise and spa treatments, and checked with us after to make sure we had a great experience. I would highly recommend asking for Victor Val if this is the treatment you would like.
