Great resort with great people

My wife and I stayed five nights, and this was our first trip to Hilton Playa de Carmen. First of all, everything was outstanding: the service, pool, food, drinks and grounds. The staff were wonderful. ... A few individuals deserve special recognition. Mario P. at Spice was our server at breakfast all but one day. He was very kind when I asked him if I could practice my Spanish with him. He was funny, patient and a joy to talk to. He even taught me a few Mayan words (he is trilingual). He made our final morning at Hilton very memorable with a neat table setting and a special dessert. Although he spent time with us, I watch him be very attentive to other diners in his section which kept him very busy. His kindness was a highlight of our trip. In addition, Baba who worked on entertainment around the main pool was amazing. I watched him lead water volleyball and he did a great job. I had a nice conversation with him, and even a few days later, he say me and called me out by name. Polux helped my wife and I with our cabana reservations for two days, and was really thoughtful and attentive. At the end of one afternoon by the pool, Gisele—on the medical team—helped me with a minor medical issue I had. She was great. Finally, all of the bartenders were great but the absolute best drinks were crafted for me at Mejorada bar right off the lobby. I did not catch their names. One was a man and another was a woman with pulled back hair. We had drinks their Friday and Monday evening.

Daughters 50th birthday party

Two problems are involved in this rating. First, our vacation club membership (Real Club) members since 2006, home resort, Real Royal Cancun (now Hyatt Zilara). We bought into the weeks program under Real... club. Real sold the resort to Hyatt in 2019ish. Real said Hyatt would grandfather and honor the existing Real club members benefits. Not true. Hyatt has slowly pushed those benefits out. We have been using the Real member reservationist to help plan and provide costs, room, dates, etc. to Hyatt Zilara in Cancun. This May we wanted to provide our family a vacation/50th birthday party for our daughter, but was told by the Real club reservationist that the Zilara in Cancun was being renovated during our time frame. So they provided us with alternate to the Hilton Playa del Carman (Which used to be the Real Royal in Playa del Carman) and was bought by Hilton 2019ish. Now comes the second of two problems. Hilton does not recognize Real club at all, and has no requirement to provide or honor benefits provided by other vacation clubs. We were also told that Hyatt is buying the Hilton playa del carman within the next few weeks. Hilton tried to sell us a playa connection package, which we did not buy into. As Hilton honors members, we figured we would have at best a few benefits, but that also proved to be a fallacy. The lackadaisical attitude of office staff and some staff around the property, was really disheartening. Overall, rooms (we had 8 to accommodate the family) at best was just ok and nothing special. Our air conditioning was out for almost two days until someone finally came to blow the dust out of the coils, sinks drains were very slow (maintenance came in and did something which lasted a couple days and then we’re slow again). The room safe failed to lock, maintenance came and fixed it. The pool area I would consider poor (weeds/moss in cracks, trash around drain areas, pool chairs rusted in water,etc.), restaurants, overall ok, food good (one family member found a caterpillar in her salad) and was reported to staff, manager apologized. Two days during the week apparently became national voting days, and no liquor was allowed except in restaurants. Transportation to and from airport was good. I don’t normally write resort or hotel reviews but this time I wanted to let others no what’s going on in Cancun and Playa Del Carman. We will not be going back to Playa anytime soon. Hilton honors as well as Hyatt will also be hearing from me.
